The presentation was made at the Graphisoft user's group conference held prior AIA National Convention in Boston 2008.

AIA Experiments with Ning's Social Networking Software

The AIA attempted a worthy experiment. They created a social network site for the conference using Ning. They selected 5 bloggers to go to different sessions and blog live about what they heard and learned. I happened to sit at the bloggers table during Kimon’s presentation. The experiment succeeded in breaking the ice into the digital domain. However, it failed because nobody knew about it. The AIA like many other organizations will need to consider offering basic Digital Literacy skills if they hope help their Digital Immigrant members gain the fluency and mindsets necessary to adapt and compete. buildingSmart Alliance

Ray Lucchesi and I met with Deke Smith, Executive Director of the buildingSmart Alliance. It is part of the National Institute of Building Science. The purpose of the Alliance is to aggregate all things that are changing the industry; BIM, technology standards, compliance, sustainability, Lean, integrated delivery etc. Deke complimented our efforts and said that we are the only group he is aware of approaching this by intentionally applying all of the integrative elements into one project and creating a business case from the results. He said that coming up with a solid business case for the benefits of integrated delivery is the biggest gap and challenge at the moment. He said our efforts would qualify as one of their alliance members and profile projects. I will explore the next step and report back.
